Grizzlies Welcome Reno With Twitter Wager

April 25, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO, CA - The first-ever meeting between the Fresno Grizzlies and Reno Aces, the Pacific Coast League's newest member, will include an off-field wager between the marketing departments of the new division rivals. With both organizations actively promoting themselves through the newest web networking tool, the Grizzlies and Aces will mark their four-game series at Chukchansi Park with baseball's first "Twitter Wager".

In a recent survey the Grizzlies and Aces were ranked among the Top 5 Minor League Baseball teams in the country in their leverage of Twitter, a communications application that has taken the Internet by storm over the last several months. Both franchises have successfully utilized the technology to better communicate with fans, clients, and media through the first weeks of the 2009 season.

Reno, new to the Pacific Coast League in 2009, will make their first visit to Chukchansi Park this weekend for a four-game series beginning on Saturday, April 25th. The wager, coordinated through the team's respective marketing departments, calls for the loser of the four-game set to "re-tweet" every message the winner posts to their subscribers on Thursday, April 30th.

"Twitter has been an invaluable tool for us in keeping our fans constantly updated with news, promotions, and even special contests," said Scott Carter, Grizzlies Senior Vice President of Marketing. "Our colleagues in Reno have also done a great job utilizing Twitter so a friendly 'twager' seemed like a great way to kick off the first series against our new division rival. As Twitter grows in popularity, much like we've seen with Facebook, and MySpace before that, Grizzlies fans will have access to their team in real-time, wherever they are, like never before."

"The Reno-Sparks area has a very active Twitter community, and we're glad to be a part of it," said Brett McGinness, Director of Marketing for the Reno Aces. "We've managed to create an ongoing conversation with our followers here in the area through Twitter-- before, during, and after games-- and it's helped us to build a close relationship with hundreds of our new fans in a very short amount of time."

The Grizzlies welcome the Reno Aces, their new division rivals, to Chukchansi Park for the first time on Saturday, April 25th. Saturday is Autism Awareness Night at the ballpark, with the home team wearing special theme jerseys during the game that will be auctioned off live following the contest to benefit the Central California Autism Center. Additionally, the first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive a Grizzlies fleece blanket, courtesy of Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino.
