O'Sullivan & Bourjos Lead In 6-1 Opening Day Win

April 9, 2009 - Texas League (TL) Arkansas Travelers

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - Right-hander Sean O'Sullivan delivered a six-inning performance while centerfielder Peter Bourjos knocked in three runs and scored twice as the Arkansas Travelers (1-0) earned a 6-1 victory over the Midland RockHounds on Thursday night. O'Sullivan (1-0) earned the win by retiring the last 16 Midland batters he faced after allowing a first-inning run. Bourjos capped a 2-for-3 night with a tie-breaking three-run triple in the second inning.

O'Sullivan allowed three hits, two that didn't leave the infield, in the first inning. Chris Carter's RBI infield single off the glove of shortstop Hainley Statia gave Midland a 1-0 lead. O'Sullivan followed with five perfect innings and finished with six strikeouts and no walks. He threw 56 strikes out of 82 pitches.

Arkansas came right back to tie the game in the first inning as Bourjos worked a leadoff walk from losing pitcher RHP Graham Godfrey (0-1) then streaked to third base when Ryan Mount's single snuck into left field. Mark Trumbo delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Leading off the bottom of the second inning, Travs rightfielder Patrick Breen walked. A one-out single by Nate Sutton sent Breen to second base, then Statia sent a high fly ball into the wind in right-centerfield. Corey Brown and Javier Herrera miscommunicated and the ball fell between them for an error that loaded the bases. Bourjos went to a full count before cracking a shot into left-center field that cleared the bases for a 4-1 lead.

Mount then grounded to second base, but even with the infield playing up Bourjos scored easily from third base for a 5-1 Travs advantage.

Wilberto Ortiz knocked in the game's last run with an RBI single to bring in Trumbo in the fifth inning.

Right-hander Bobby Mosebach took the ball for the seventh tossed two shutout frames. Lefty Barret Browning finished the game with a perfect ninth inning.

The game was played in 2:46 and the paid attendance was 5,103.

The Travs and Hounds return to Dickey-Stephens Park on Friday night for the second game of the season. Arkansas has righty Jordan Walden taking the mound against Midland righty Jason Fernandez. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. and gates open at 6:10 p.m.
