Chivas USA falls 1-0 to San Jose Earthquakes in preseason scrimmage

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, March 4, 2009) - Chivas USA fell 1-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes today in a preseason scrimmage played on University Field 2 at The Home Depot Center. The match was the Red-and-White's first action of 2009 against another Major League Soccer team, and Cam Weaver's goal in the 7th minute ended up being the only scoring of the match.

In an intense and physical game, San Jose took the lead in the 7th minute when Arturo Alvarez rounded the Chivas USA defense and played a low cross into the middle, where Weaver finished from six yards out. The Red-and-White had the bulk of the chances in the rest of the match, especially as they pushed forward in the final ten minutes of the match, but Joe Cannon made several saves to preserve the shutout.

Chivas USA's preseason record falls to 4-2-1 (W-L-T) with the result, and the team will next face the Chicago Fire in a closed-door scrimmage on Saturday, also at The Home Depot Center (media interested in attending should contact Chivas USA Communications).
