Albany River Rats News Release
ALBANY, NY - Mike Iggulden scored in the first minute of the game as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers went on to beat the Albany River Rats 4-2 Wednesday night at the Times Union Center.
Bridgeport scored the game's first goal just 56 seconds into the contest to set the tone of the game early; team points leader Mike Iggulden collected a pass from behind the net and beat River Rats goaltender Daniel Manzato with a quick shot for his 18th of the year. Minutes later Albany leveled the score when Jerome Samson sent a crisp pass through the low slot to assistant captain Pat Dwyer for the put-away at 4:44. The Sound Tigers reclaimed the lead at the midpoint of the frame as James Sixsmith tipped an Andrew MacDonald slap-shot over Manzato and the visitors never looked back.
After an evenly-played, scoreless second period, Bridgeport extended their lead to 3-1 on the power play when Trevor Smith backhanded a Chris Lee rebound around Manzato for his 21st of the season at 4:51 of the third. With less than four minutes remaining Albany made it 3-2 on Brian Rodney's first goal of the season. Rodney walked the puck down the side boards and ripped a slap shot by Bridgeport's Nathan Lawson at 16:37, giving the home team some life as he cut the lead to 3-2. However, Sound Tigers forward Jason Pitton halted the River Rats comeback attempt when he snapped a wrist shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net for a short-handed goal with 1:45 remaining to finish the game 4-2.
Sound Tigers goaltender Nathan Lawson stopped 21-of-23 shots and earned the win as Bridgeport improved to 26-13-2-2 on the season. Albany starter Daniel Manzato made 14 saves on 18 shots and took the loss as the River Rats fell to 17-21-3-2. Albany out-shot the Sound Tigers 23-18 in the game and went 0-for-4 on the power play; Bridgeport was 0-for-1 with the man advantage.
Albany continues their three-game home stand on Friday, January 23rd as they host the Binghamton Senators for a 7:00 pm face off at the Times Union Center. The River Rats will host Rochester on Saturday, January 24th, leading the team into the AHL All-Star Break.
