B-Sens Blank Philly in East Division Battle

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Netminder Martin Gerber put up 32 saves and recorded his first career AHL shutout to backstop the B-Sens to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phantoms Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The first period was a defensive battle with Binghamton posting the lone goal of the opening stanza with a power play goal by Tomas Kudelka. Just before their first man advantage expired, center Peter Regin threaded a pass through the crease to Kudelka from the far corner for a wide open tip in past Philadelphia goaltender Scott Munroe.
In the second period both teams again played hard defensively, limiting chances to the opposition until the B-Sens broke through with a goal by Mark Cavosie. With five minutes left in the middle period, Ryan Shannon found Cavosie who fired a wrister from the left face off circle. On its way to the net, the puck deflected off of a Phantom stick and fluttered over Munroe's glove to give Cavosie his third goal of the season and the B-Sens a 2-0 lead.
Still working hard to preserve the shutout for Gerber, the B-Sens forced the puck out of their zone during a 6-on-5 onslaught from Philadelphia and sealed the deal with an empty-net goal by Zack Smith. Smith collected a loose puck off of a blocked shot and beat the lone Philadelphia defender who stood in the way for the B-Sens third goal of the game. Shannon and Cavosie were awarded with assists on the play giving them both two-point nights. With his second period assist, Shannon extended his point streak to four games (0+7).
The B-Sens (23-13-3-3, 52 pts.) head up I-88 to take on the Albany River Rats (17-21-3-2, 39 pts.) on Friday night at 7 p.m. Tune into 680 WINR-AM or 1430 WENE-AM 30 minutes before game time for Countdown to Faceoff with Grady Whittenburg, Voice of the B-Sens.
