Windsor Spitfires News Release
(Windsor) Windsor Spitfires defenseman Ryan Ellis helped Team Canada make it five Golds in a row at the World Junior Hockey Championships earlier tonight, as Canada scored a resounding 5-1 victory over team Sweden in front of over 20,000 fans at the SBP Centre in Ottawa, ON. Cody Hodgson (Brampton Battalion - OHL) paced the Canadian attack with two goals, while John Tavares (Oshawa Generals - OHL) and Jordan Eberle (Regina Pats - WHL) scored one goal and one assist respectively while Ellis recorded one assist in the contest. P.K Subban (Belleville Bulls - OHL) opened the scoring on the power play 38 seconds into the game, giving Team Canada a 1-0 lead which held into the first intermission.
Team Canada increased their lead to 2-0 as Angelo Esposito (Montreal Juniors - QMJHL) scored on a spectacular rush at 4:06 of the second period. Canadian goaltender Dustin Tokarski (Spokane Chiefs - WHL) stood tall, making 21 saves in the first two periods, as the Canadians took a 2-0 lead to the dressing room after 40 minutes of play. Just 33 second into the third frame, Cody Hodgson (Brampton Battalion - OHL) gave Team Canada a commanding 3-0 lead on the power play, converting on a feed from Ryan Ellis. Team Sweden then scored their first goal of the contest roughly eight minutes later at the 8:30 mark, as Joakim Andersson beat Dustin Tokarski on the high glove side. Team Sweden put the pressure on Canada for a good part of the third period, before Jordan Eberle (Regina Pats - WHL) and Cody Hodgson scored empty net goals at 18:07 and 19:28 respectively to give Team Canada its fifth consecutive World Junior Hockey Championship.
Ellis, an 18 year-old native of Freelton, Ontario now adds a World Junior Hockey Gold Medal, to an already impressive international junior hockey resume which includes Gold Medals as part of Team Ontario at the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in London, ON and with the Canadian National Men's Under-18 team at the 2008 IIHF World Under-18 Championship this past summer in Kazan, Russia.
The Windsor Spitfires congratulate Ryan on his outstanding achievement tonight and look forward to welcoming him back to Windsor!
