Anderson, Smith-Pelly Win Gold with Ontario at Under-17s

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors are proud to announce that Majors rookies JP Anderson (goaltender) and Devanté Smith-Pelly (forward) have won gold with Team Ontario at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

The tournament featured some of the world's top players born in 1992 or later, and took place from December 29, 2008 to January 4, 2009 in Port Alberni, BC. This is the second consecutive year that Ontario, with a record of 6-0 at the event, has brought home the gold.

Anderson, a 5'10, 175 lbs. goalie, produced a 2.31 GAA and 0.945 save percentage in 5 games played at the tournament, and was also named to the tournament's all-star team. He appeared in 12 games with the Majors, and has recorded a 2.90 GAA and a 0.904 save percentage so far this season. The 16 year-old native of Toronto, Ontario was the Majors 2nd round pick (30th overall) of the 2008 OHL Priority Selection, and played for the Toronto Marlboros prior to joining the Mississauga squad.

Smith-Pelly, also 16 years old, produced 3 assists in 6 games played at the tournament. He was the Majors 1st round pick (8th overall) of the 2008 OHL Priority Selection. The 5'11", 180 lbs. centreman from Scarborough, Ontario collected 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points in 32 games played with the Mississauga club as a rookie this year, and played for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens prior to joining the Majors.

Both Anderson and Smith-Pelly will be eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2010. They are expected to be returning to the Majors lineup this weekend.
