Esks sign promising receiver Challenger

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos today announced the signing of non-import receiver Kevin Challenger to a multi-year contract.

In his rookie campaign with the Esks, the Montreal native and former Boston College standout played in all 18 regular season games and both playoff games. He cracked the Eskimo lineup with his solid play on special teams, but later in the season emerged as a dependable target on offence.

Eskimo General Manager and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia says "Kevin showed why he was so highly regarded coming out of college. As a rookie he demonstrated maturity and poise and I think he's got a very bright future with us".

Challenger caught his first pass as a pro (14 yds) from Ricky Ray in Edmonton's 38 - 33 win over Calgary Friday, September 5th. In the Esks' 37 - 14 win over Montreal (Oct 31), Challenger hooked up with Jason Maas for an 80 yard reception - Edmonton's longest play of the season.

Challenger, originally drafted by Calgary in 2007 and acquired by Edmonton in a draft day deal last year, says "Last year showed that we're building something special here in Edmonton. The Eskimos are a first class organization and I want to be part of that for years to come."

In Challenger's rookie season he recorded eight receptions for 166 yards and one special teams tackle.
