Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The countdown continues in Brandon as the Wheat Kings continue preparations on what they hope will be a successful bid to host the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
The Wheat Kings, who would receive an automatic berth into the Cup as the host team, will be one of three cities vying for the honour. The others are the Kelowna Rockets and the Everett Silvertips.
The bid presentations will take place at the next Western Hockey League Board of Governors in-person meeting on October 15th in Calgary. The decision on which club will host the event will be determined by a vote of the WHL Board of Governors and will be announced later that same day.
Brandon announced plans to submit a bid to host the Tournament in August, following news that both the City of Brandon and Province of Manitoba were committed to contributing $5 million to upgrade the Keystone Centre as well as the $800,000 profit guarantee.
The MasterCard Memorial Cup will bring primetime national exposure to the city as well as a multi-million dollar economic impact to Brandon.
The MasterCard Memorial Cup is a Canadian Hockey League event which features the champions of the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the WHL competing in four team tournament format with the host club.
Since joining the Western Canada Hockey League in 1967, the Wheat Kings have attended three Memorial Cup Tournaments - Montreal (1979), Kamloops (1995) and Peterborough (1996). Brandon also played the Montreal Royals for the 1949 Memorial Cup title.
