D.C. United News Release

Washington, D.C. (October 1, 2008) - D.C. United today announced the club will once again sell D.C. United Breast Cancer Awareness merchandise during the month of October. Partnering with Kicks Against Breast Cancer for the third year, United has produced D.C. United Breast Cancer Awareness Hats and Pins that will be available for purchase beginning on Wednesday at United's Champions League game vs. Cruz Azul and throughout the month of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Hats and pins will be sold together for $20 and proceeds will benefit the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, located at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, MD. To purchase, fans can visit one of United's five merchandise kiosks on game days or the Official Team Store at RFK Stadium's Main Gate, or call 202-546-7023.

"Through the generous support of D.C. United and its fans, Kicks Against Breast Cancer is able to continue providing valuable resources to patients who are afflicted with cancer," said Kicks Against Breast Cancer founder, Louise Waxler. "The Kicks Against Breast Cancer soccer tournament has become American soccer's initiative to raise money in the fight against breast cancer and to help women living with cancer survive and thrive. The partnership between D.C. United and Kicks Against Breast Cancer enables us to help fulfill our mission."

Kicks Against Breast Cancer holds an annual women's intercollegiate soccer tournament each April in honor and memory of Claudia Mayer, who died in 1996 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. The tournament is held at the Maryland SoccerPlex and features some of the top collegiate teams around the nation.

With approximately 50% of each hat and pin sale donated to the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, last year's initiative helped raise $10,000, a number that is hoped to be matched this year. Howard County General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center, a division of Johns Hopkins Medicine, is a leading-edge wellness model focused on helping individuals living with cancer and cancer survivors cope with the psychological and physical side effects of this disease, including post-mastectomy scarring and prosthetics, hair loss, edema, exhaustion and other physical issues. Founded in 1998, the center always welcomes gifts and donations from individuals, corporations and other organizations. To donate directly to the foundation, go to the Volunteer/Contribute section on the website, hcgh.org .
