(Trenton, NJ)- Eric Hacker tossed 5 2/3 solid innings, and Right Fielder Edwar Gonzalez had the go-ahead RBI single, as Trenton defeated Portland 2-1 in Game #1 of the Northern Division Championship on Wednesday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton's bullpen did not allow a hit in 3 1/3 shutout innings.
With the game tied 1-1 in the fourth inning, Trenton scored the go-ahead run. Left fielder Colin Curtis singled to start the inning off of Portland Starting pitcher Kris Johnson (0-1). Curtis advanced to second base on a ground out by Designated hitter P.J. Pilittere. After Francisco Cervelli was hit by a pitch, Gonzalez singled just out of the reach of Portland Shortstop Argenis Diaz. The single plated Curtis to make it 2-1. The lead held up behind Hacker (1-0) and the Thunder bullpen. Hacker scattered five hits and a run in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one in the win. Johnson took the loss for Portland as he allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits over six innings. Hacker left with runners at first and second base and two outs in the sixth inning. Thunder Reliever Michael Dunn came on and struck out Center fielder Josh Reddick to end the threat. Dunn left the game in favor of Thunder reliever Jhonny Nunez with a runner on first base and two outs in the seventh. Nunez struck out Diaz for the final out of the inning, and retired all seven batters he faced to pick up the save. He struck out four in 2 1/3 innings.
Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With Second baseman Reegie Corona on second base and two outs, First baseman Chris Malec hit a ground ball to Portland Second baseman Iggy Suarez. Suarez mishandled the ball, and made an errant throw to first off the glove of Portland First baseman Aaron Bates. The error allowed Corona to score the first run of the game. Portland tied the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Josh Reddick. Bates had two doubles in the loss for Portland.
Trenton and Portland play Game #2 of the Northern Division Championship Series on Thursday night from Waterfront Park. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. RHP Jeff Marquez (1-1, 2.93) will start against RHP Clay Buchholz (1-0, 1.80).
