Carlos Ruiz, Amado Guevara return to face Chivas USA; Tauro F.C. hosts tomorrow's Champions League

CARLOS RUIZ, AMADO GUEVARA RETURN TO LEAD TORONTO FC AGAINST CHIVAS USA THIS SATURDAY: This Saturday night at The Home Depot Center, Chivas USA will square off against Guatemala captain Carlos ‘El Pescado' Ruiz and Honduras captain and former Chivas USA player Amado ‘El Lobo' Guevara of Toronto FC in a crucial match, as the Red-and-White look to start moving up in the standings. After earning a 0-0 draw against San Jose this past Saturday, Chivas USA sits tied for fourth place in the Western Conference with a record of 6-9-6 (W-L-T) and 24 points, just three behind second-place Real Salt Lake. Toronto FC, meanwhile, has a 7-9-5 record, and is tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Should they appear, it would be Guevara's first game against Chivas USA after leaving the team in 2007, and Ruiz's first since joining Toronto in a trade from the LA Galaxy last week. The game is also Chivas USA's ‘Kids Day Out', with fans receiving free Rally Towels courtesy of Gatorade, and chances to participate in a number of special activities throughout the game (information below). CHIVAS USA IN PANAMA FOR TOMORROW'S CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE OPENER; FREE PARKING SEPTEMBER 2 VS. TAURO F.C.: Chivas USA kicks off its campaign in the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday evening in Panama City, where the Red-and-White will square off against Tauro F.C. of the Panamanian first division. The match kicks off at 5:00 p.m. PT (7:00 p.m. CT) and will be broadcast LIVE on Galavision, and tape-delayed on Fox Soccer Channel at 7:00 p.m. PT. The 24-team Champions League is in the Preliminary Round, where 16 teams will vie for spots in the Group Stage of the tournament by playing a home-and-home series against another club; the team that scores more goals in the two matches will advance. If Chivas USA defeats Tauro F.C., it will advance to a group that includes Santos Laguna of Mexico, Municipal of Guatemala, and the winner of the Preliminary Round matchup between LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica and the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USL First Division. CELEBRATE KIDS DAY OUT THIS SATURDAY AT THE HOME DEPOT CENTER: Chivas USA's match against Toronto on Saturday night will celebrate Kids Day Out at The Home Depot Center. Fans in attendance will receive a free Rally Towel from Gatorade while supplies last, and then kids will be treated to free face-painting in the ChivaTown Fan Zone. Children at the match can also enter to win a game-worn jersey in the "Shirts Off Our Backs" promotion, where fans will be on the field at the end of the match to get a jersey from a Chivas USA player. The band Alerta will also perform before the game in ChivaTown. INJURY UPDATE: ESKANDARIAN RETURNS TO THE FIELD FOR CHIVAS USA: This past weekend against San Jose, Alecko Eskandarian made a return to the field for Chivas USA after missing time due to recovering from sports hernia surgery. Eskandarian came into the match as substitute in the second half, nearly scoring his second goal of the season in the closing minutes. Defender Lawson Vaughn was on the bench for the Red-and-White, but did not see action in the game. Several other players missed the match due to injuries: Justin Braun (right ankle sprain), Maykel Galindo (sports hernia surgery), Jesse Marsch (fractured jaw), Raphaël Wicky (R ankle surgery), and Alex Zotinca (R knee surgery).

CHIVAS USA DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY TEAMS START TRAINING MONDAY: The Chivas USA Under-18 and Under-16 Teams, which play in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, will begin preseason training on Monday afternoon at the Bell Gardens Sports Center. The teams have spent the summer preparing for the 2008-09 Development Academy season with tryouts and invitations to the squads for talented players, and the teams are now ready to begin practicing. Last season was the first ever for the Development Academy, which was founded to help develop talented American youth players. Both the U-18 and U-16 Teams will play against the United States U-18 and U-16 National Teams on Sept. 13, and then face the San Diego Surf U-18 and U-16 on Sept. 27 in the first Development Academy match for the Red-and-White of the 2008-09 season.

LAST CHANCE FOR CHIVAS USA SOCCER CAMPS AND TRYOUTS: Chivas USA's Soccer Camps, which also double as tryouts for the Chivas USA Youth Teams, are down to the final session, which will take place on Aug. 29 at the Bell Gardens Sports Center in Bell Gardens, Calif. and Aug. 30 at The Home Depot Center. This camp gives players a chance to receive professional instruction from Chivas USA coaches, and could potentially lead to an invitation to join the Chivas USA U-18 or U-16 Teams, which participate in the United States Soccer Development Academy, or the highly competitive U-15 Team. Invited players from earlier camps this summer have already started training with the Youth Teams as they try to earn spots with the club.

‘KICK-IT' ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6 AT THE STUDIO CITY RECREATION CENTER: ‘Kick-it at the Park L.A. with Chivas USA' continues on Saturday, September 6, with a clinic at the Studio City Recreation Center at 12621 Rye Street in Studio City. A series of four, 90-minute clinics kicks off at 9:00 a.m., followed by clinics at 10:45 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Run in conjunction with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, ‘Kick-it' is a series of clinics that emphasize physical fitness, sports, and education for as many as 400 children at each of 40 locations throughout the year. A five-dollar fee gets participants 90 minutes of instruction, a voucher for a free ticket to a Chivas USA game, a t-shirt, soccer ball, and Certificate of Completion. Most recently, Chivas USA held a clinic at the Adam Bischoff Soccer Fields at the West Hills Sports Center at 6900 Valley Circle Drive in West Hills on August 23. CELEBRATE ‘YEAR OF THE EMPEROR' WITH CLAUDIO SUÁREZ' NEW BIOGRAPHY: After more than 20 years as a professional soccer player, Chivas USA's legendary Mexican defender Claudio Suárez has come out with his biography, which contains photographs and stories gathered over the course of two years by both Claudio Suárez and the well-known author Enrique León Candiani. Showing the dedication and determination of the Chivas USA central defender, the book documents the story of Suárez, who has won championships in the Mexican First Division, participated in World Cups, and made more appearances with the Mexican National Team than any other player in history. The book is on sale online at Target.com, Soccer.com/Claudio, and Amazon.com, as well as in most bookstores across the United States and Mexico. The Spanish version of the biography is already out, and an English version will be released shortly.

REACTIONS FROM CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ON THIS WEEK'S ‘PASIÓN CHIVAS USA': Join Hipólito Gamboa and Rigoberto Cervantez this Thursday from 6:00-7:00 p.m. PT on W Radio 690 AM for ‘Pasión Chivas USA.' CHIVAS USA BIRTHDAYS: The Red-and-White have five players celebrating birthdays in August, starting on the 9th when rookie midfielder Keith Savage turned 23. Next up was goalkeeper Lance Parker on Aug. 19th, also celebrating his 23rd birthday. Forward Anthony Hamilton and defender Carey Talley share an Aug. 26th birthday, with Hamilton turning 23 and Talley, in his 11th MLS season, turning 32. Finally, Eric Ebert will celebrate his 24th a day later, on the 27th.
