Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Jake Dugger went 2-for-3 with two doubles, including a go ahead RBI double in the seventh, and Carlos Peralta tossed three perfect innings of relief for the victory as the Vermont Lake Monsters beat the Hudson Valley Renegades 7-6 in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.
Vermont rallied twice in the game from 3-0 down with three runs in the third, then answered a two-run top of the sixth for the Renegades by scoring twice in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 5-5.
The Lake Monsters then took their first lead in the seventh when Stephen Englund drew a one-out walk and scored on a line drive double to right field by Dugger for the 6-5 lead. Vermont added an insurance run in the eighth with the help of three walks, including a bases loaded walk Steve Souza to force home a run.
That insurance run would be needed as the Renegades scored in the top of the ninth off reliever Austin Garrett and had the tying run on third with one out, but Garrett struckout Anthony Scelfo to end the game and earn his first save of the season. It was also the first save for a Vermont pitcher since July 22nd at Brooklyn.
Every batter in the Lake Monsters lineup, which was without both Derek Norris and Michael Guerrero for the first time this season, had at least one hit except for leadoff batter Marcus Jones. The 11th-round pick of the Washington Nationals in the 2008 draft, Jones went 0-for-3 with a run scored in his professional debut as the starting centerfielder for Vermont.
Mark Thomas went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the second inning that gave Hudson Valley a 3-0 lead. Jeff Carroll added an RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Renegades the 5-3 lead, but Englund and Tyler Moore both had RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.
Peralta (3-0) came on for Vermont in relief of starter Pat McCoy to start the sixth inning and promtly retired all nine batters that he faced, including two strikeouts in the sixth inning. Jake Smolinski and Souza both had two hits, a run and an RBI single for the Lake Monsters, while Englund and Yhonson Lopez both scored a pair of runs.
Robert Della Grotta (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings of relief to take the loss for Hudson Valley (37-26), which had a four-game winning streak snapped and remains three games behind Staten Island for first-place in the McNamara Division.
Vermont (26-36) hosts Hudson Valley again on Monday night beginning at 7:05 pm with PJ Dean (3-1, 0.88 ERA) scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters, who will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day in August at Centennial.
