Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The 6,707 fans in attendance at Fluor Field saw one of the strangest outcomes to a game Saturday night. The Drive (67-64, 27-34) managed just two hits and won, while Scott Barnes struckout 14 in 6.0 innings for the GreenJackets (81-49, 40-21) and suffered the loss.
The Drive pushed across both of their runs in the bottom of the first, needing just one hit. David Mailman began the inning by reaching on a fielding error and Rafael Cabreja followed with a double. Zach Penprase knocked in Greenville's first run with an RBI-groundout and Oscar Tejeda then collected an RBI when he grounded into a fielder's choice.
From their, the Drive offense had no answers for Barnes (2-2). The left-hander retired 17 straight batters, recording all 14 of his strikeouts over that span including eight in a row at one point.
Terumasa Matsuo (6-5), however, attacked the GreenJackets with a different approach. The product of Japan scattered seven hits over 6.0 innings, striking out six and limiting Augusta to just one run.
The GreenJackets plated their lone run in the top of the third as Juan Ciriaco singled home Andrew Davis. Augusta attempted to tie the game on the play, but Jered Stanley gunned Shane Jordan at the plate.
Manny Arambarris tallied the Drive's only other hit with a single in the seventh off reliever Mitch Lively.
Greenville received solid relief work by Lance McClain and Felix Ventura. McClain hurled 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and fanning two. Ventura allowed two hits in the ninth and was able to get out of a jam with two runners in scoring position to earn his 19th save of the season.
The Drive and GreenJackets continue their three-game series Sunday with first pitch set for 4:05 PM at Fluor Field. Right-hander Chad Povich will toe the rubber for Greenville as Augusta counters with lefty Craig Clark
Sunday will also be the final Family FunDay at Fluor Field in which kids get to run the bases at the conclusion of the game. For more information regarding single-game tickets, ticket plans, group outings and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
