Huntsville Stars News Release

Saturday August 23, when the Huntsville Stars open their last homestand of the season, they will attempt to set a new world record for the most ceremonial first pitches thrown before the start of a professional baseball game.

Normally the Stars open the gates at Joe Davis Stadium an hour before the start of a game, but for Saturday's world record attempt, the Stars will open the gates at 12:01am. That will give the Starsfans over 19 hours to break the record of 8,304 that is currently held by the Brevard County Manatees.

"Every year on Opening Day, we all sit at home and watch the president throw out the first pitch," Stars' GM Buck Rogers explained. "Then we spend the rest of the season watching dignitaries, celebrities, and VIPs bounce pitches up to the plate. What makes them so special?"

"They're not any more special than our fans, and on Saturday we're going to let every fan, everybody in the Tennessee Valley throw out a pitch."

After 3:00 pm fans will need a ticket to Saturday night's game to enter the stadium and participate in the world record attempt. Those fans will receive a "World Record First Pitch Participant" baseball, presented by Cabinet NG.

If that's not enough, at 7:05 pm the Stars will host the first-place Carolina Mudcats, the Double-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins, in the Stars' last homestand of the year.
