Wainwright Leads Cards Past Hooks

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Adam Wainwright appears ready to return to St. Louis. Just ask the Hooks.
The Cardinal right-hander tossed 4.2 innings of shutout ball in a rehab effort for Springfield and added a single and a run on offense to help the home team to a 5-2 victory over the Hooks Saturday night at Hammons Field.
Wainwright, recovering from a sprained middle finger on his pitching hand, allowed just three hits, all singles, and did not walk a batter. He threw 64 pitches and struck out seven. Wainwright also provided the first hit in the game - an infield single with one out in the second. He scored on Daryl Jones' triple to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
The win went to reliever Josh Dew (1-2), who followed Wainwright with 2.1 innings of shutout work. Dew fanned five and, like Wainwright, provided a single and a run on offense.
Luke Gregerson recorded the final four outs to notch his 10th save. Gregerson came on in the eighth with two on and two out after the Hooks had rallied for a couple of runs. He struck out Eli Iorg to close out the frame.
Hooks' starter Casey Hudspeth (2-4) suffered the loss, charged with four runs, three earned, on eight hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out three. As was the case in his previous start, Hudspeth had control issues early, doling out three walks in the first. That and an error by the Hooks allowed the Cardinals to score twice in the first without the benefit of a base hit.
Jonny Ash and Drew Sutton collected RBI's for the Hooks, who snapped a string of 20 innings without a run by scoring twice in the eighth.
Southpaws Polin Trinidad (5-5) and Justin Fiske (2-0) take center stage when the two clubs battle again Sunday night at 6:10.
