Rockford RiverHawks News Release

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - All-star second baseman Joe Anthonsen extended his hitting streak to 14 games and moved up in the record books on Saturday as the Rockford RiverHawks, 10-2.

The RiverHawks snapped a three-game losing streak and won at VA Memorial Stadium for just the third time in team history. Rockford is 3-12 all-time at Chillicothe.

The RiverHawks led from start to finish and blew the game open with a six-run third inning. Tony Gonzalez singled in a run with two outs in the first inning to give Rockford the early lead.

In each of the next two innings, Chillicothe starter Ryan Flanigan retired the first two batters in order but couldn't escape without giving up a run. In the second inning, Flanigan faced a two-on, two-out jam. Both runners ran on the pitch, which Flanigan bounced to the backstop. The front runner, Jono Brooks, scored from second base on a double-steal/wild pitch combination.

Flanigan (1-4), last season's Frontier League ERA champion, did not survive the third inning. Seven straight batters reached base with two outs. Brooks lined a two-run double to the wall in right field to drive Flanigan from the mound. Anthonsen followed with a two-run triple.

That hit moved Anthonsen into sole possession of second place on the RiverHawks' all-time hit list. Anthonsen, who extended the best hitting streak of his three-year career with a 3-for-6 performance, passed Rich Austin, who totaled 245 hits in his three years with Rockford. Anthonsen now has 247 hits. Ben Fjelland, at 311, is the all-time leader.

Rockford starter Peden Rucker (1-1) scattered two runs on six hits, including a leadoff home run in the second inning by Travis Storrer, for his first professional win.

Bryan Cook homered for the RiverHawks.

The rubber match of the three-game series is at 5:05 p.m. CDT Sunday.

The RiverHawks, on a nine-game trip, do not play a home game until July 18, when River City visits at 7:05 p.m. Culver's and 104.9 - the X sponsor RiverHawks Baseball Card Night #3, an eight-card subset featuring current RiverHawks, a former RiverHawks great and a WXRX DJ. FatWallet.com and WIFR sponsor the Friday Night Fireworks Series following the game.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season.
