'Wings lose in slugfest

Harlingen, TX - TheAmarillo Dillas (29-18) scored three runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings to beat the Harlingen WhiteWings (16-32) 10-8 tonight at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings jumped on Marcos Castillo (6-2) in the first. Kevin Griffin led off by getting hit by a pitch and Bub Bergstrom followed with a bunt single. Next up was Matt Kramer, who hit a two-run double in his first professional at-bat. After a Ryan Fox walk, Brian Nichols hit a grounder to the right side, but the throw to second hit Fox in the back. David Cardona grounded into a double-play to send Kramer home. Amadeo Zazueta followed with an RBI-single to make it 4-0.

Danny Bravo got one back against Juan Jimenez in the top of the second with his 10th home run.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Cardona singled and Zazueta followed with his first home run as a WhiteWing to make it 6-1.

Bravo led off the top of the fourth with a six-pitch walk. Two outs later, Stephen Douglas doubled and Justin Wenger was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A passed ball scored Bravo and Joel Gonzales followed with a two-run triple to make it 6-4.

With Bergstrom at first and two outs in the fourth, Kramer launched a ball off the top of the left-center field wall for an RBI-double to make it 7-4.

The Dillas tied it in the top of the sixth. A.J. Johnson and Andrew Wong led off with singles. One out later, Wenger walked to load the bases. Gonzlaes hit a sacrifice fly and Jonathan Reynoso followed with a two-run double to make it 7-7.

Jimenez ended up going seven innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits while walking four, hitting one and striking out eight.

Brandon Kling (2-1) came in for the top of the eighth, and despite not allowing a hard hit ball, gave up three runs. Douglas and Wenger led off with bunt singles. One out later, Reynoso walked to load the bases. A passed ball moved all the runners up, allowing Douglas to score. Moments later, Kling balked to score Wenger and move Reynoso to third. One out later, Gary Schneidmiller hit an RBI-single to make it 10-7 Dillas.

In the bottom of the eighth and one out, Cardona doubled and Zazueta followed with an RBI-single to make it 10-8.

That was all for Castillo, who went seven and one-third innings, allowing eight runs on ten hits while walking one, hitting two and striking two to pick up the win.

David Koons pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

The WhiteWings get tomorrow off before returning to action on Thursday in Laredo at 7:35 p.m. Right-hander Bobby Darling (1-4) will face right-hander Gregorio Martinez (4-1).
