Grizzlies take first of three from 'Hawks

LOVES PARK, IL-The Gateway Grizzlies captured game one of a three-game series Saturday night, defeating the Rockford RiverHawks 8-6 in front of 4,881 at Road Ranger Stadium.

The Grizzlies (19-18) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first. The lead soon disappeared, as Rockford scored a pair in the bottom half to go up 2-1. Gateway then took a 4-2 lead with three second-inning runs. Michael Campbell drove in a pair of runs with a double. Robbie Minor added an RBI with a two-out base hit.

Rockford (18-19) scored twice in the bottom half of the second to tie the game again at four.

The two teams would continue the back-and-forth scoring. Mike Breyman homered leading off the fifth to tie the score at five. Minor tripled to lead off the sixth then scored on wild pitch to put the Grizzlies up 6-5. Stephen Holdren drove in a run with a hit in the seventh to make it 7-5. Joe Anthonsen answered in the bottom of the seventh for the ‘Hawks with a lead off home run to make it 7-6.

The Grizzlies tallied an insurance run in the ninth. Holdren singled with one out, then scored on a double by Minor.

Minor finished the night 3-4 with two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

Joel Boeschen (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Grizzlies. Boeschen tossed three innings, allowing a run on four hits. He struck out one.

Demetri White started for the Grizzlies and lasted four innings. Eric Ridener tossed a scoreless eighth. Zach Gray earned his fourth save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Grizzlies and ‘Hawks continue the series with a 6:05 p.m. game Sunday night at Road Ranger Stadium.
