Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma Rainiers fans will help provide limbs for amputees who can't afford them by bidding on special jerseys worn by the team July 3.

The Rainiers will wear red, white and blue patriotic jerseys when they take on the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at 7 p.m. July 3 at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma. The jerseys will be auctioned during the game to benefit the Limbs for Life Foundation. The silent auction will run through the sixth inning of the game July 3. The jerseys will be available after the game and each individual jersey will be autographed by its respective player.

Limbs for Life is a non-profit organization that buys prosthetic limbs for amputees that can't otherwise afford them in the United States and uses donated limbs to help amputees in foreign countries such as the Dominican Republic.

"We are grateful to the Tacoma Rainiers for this wonderful opportunity," said Craig Gavras, Limbs for Life's executive director. "The money raised at this event will give several amputees the chance to live a normal life."

The Rainiers are one of several Triple-A teams doing fundraisers for the foundation this year. Thanks to the efforts of people in cities like Tacoma this summer, Limbs for Life will be able to give new limbs to amputees in the United States as well as improve the quality of prosthetic care in the Dominican Republic.

Limbs for Life is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It was co-founded in 1995 by Gavras, who after losing a limb realized the need to help less-fortunate amputees. The foundation provides financial assistance to hundreds of amputees a year in the U.S., collects used limbs for distribution in foreign countries, provides support and resources for amputees and works to educate others on the challenges facing amputees.
