Cannistra Gets the Call to New York

NORWICH, CT-Whether you're a player or a staff member, you dream of one day receiving that illustrious call. For the Defenders Head Grounds Keeper Mike Cannistra, he received the "call" earlier this week from the New York Mets and accepted the position of Assistant Grounds Keeper the team announced today.

"It's the hope of everyone in minor league baseball whether it's a player or staff member to make it to the big leagues. We are very proud as an organization that this opportunity has presented itself for Mike and wish him the best of luck," said General Manager Charlie Dowd.

Cannistra, with 6 years of experience has spent the past year and a half manicuring the baseball diamond at Dodd Stadium. The Cooperstown, NY native began his career at the Hall of Fame Double-A Field in Cooperstown for two summers growing up. He spent the 2005 season aboard the San Diego Padres grounds crew then moved to West Haven, CT to accept the head job for the now defunct New Haven County Cutters of the Independent CanAm League.

"It's been a good experience out here in Norwich but I'm excited about this new opportunity to head back to the big leagues and become a head grounds keeper one day," said Cannistra.

Cannistra graduated from Clemson University in 2004 with a degree in Turf/Grass Management.
