State College Spikes News Release

(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - The State College Spikes announced today the identity of the 2008 People's Choice Bobblehead will be Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher Zach Duke. The first 2,000 fans through the gate for the Spikes' July 10th game against the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Rays) will receive a Zach Duke bobblehead.

"The people have spoken and Zach Duke has prevailed," said Rick Janac, General Manager of the State College Spikes. "It's a great opportunity to honor the first Pirate major leaguer to play in State College."

The People's Choice Bobblehead voting began May 1st, with over 2,300 fans placing their votes for the bobblehead identity. Fans voted online at www.statecollegespikes.com or in person at The Family Clothesline.

Duke became the first member of the Pittsburgh Pirates' major league team to make an appearance at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on September 6, 2007. The left-hander made his fourth rehab start after being diagnosed with irritation of the ulnar collateral ligament on July 2. Duke earned the win for the Spikes, giving up three hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings.

The Spikes will open up the home season on June 19th, when former Penn State star and current Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson will be on hand to throw out the first pitch as the Spikes take on the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins). The first 5,000 fans will receive a 2008 Schedule Magnet presented by PSECU, and all fans will be able to enjoy the first post-game fireworks show of the season.
