Harrisburg Senators News Release

Washington Nationals 1B Dmitri Young, a 2007 National League All-Star, is expected to join the Harrisburg Senators for a rehab stint beginning Tuesday at Commerce Bank Park when the Senators open a six-game homestand Tuesday at 6:05 PM against the Reading Phillies.

Young, 34, is recovering from a sprained lower back which has kept him on the shelf since early April.

Young became the Nationals' clubhouse leader last season in one of his finest years as a major-leaguer. He was named the 2007 National League Comeback Player of the Year after hitting a career-best .320 for the Nationals. Young is a two-time All-Star at the major-league level. He was an American League All-Star in 2003 for the Detroit Tigers. He also appeared in the 2007 Mid-Summer Classic in San Francisco.

The Vicksburg, Mississippi native was originally selected by the Cardinals with the fourth overall pick of the 1991 draft. Young holds a career .292 major-league batting average. He has played for the Cardinals, Reds, Tigers and Nationals during his 18-year professional career. In 2006, he played six Eastern League games during a rehab stint with Erie. Young's younger brother, Delmon, is an outfielder for the Minnesota Twins.

This is the first Nats player to rehab with the Senators this season. Last year four Nationals players were sent to Harrisburg to rehab with the Sens and they were Mike O'Connor, Jerome Williams, Ray King and Alex Escobar.

The Senators, currently the Southern Division leaders, open a six-game homestand Tuesday night against Reading. After playing three games against Reading, the Altoona Curve come to Commerce Bank Park for three games beginning Friday night. During the six-game homestand, there will be two giveaways (Adult Caps on Saturday night and Sunglasses on Sunday); a post-game fireworks show (Friday night); and Tuesday night the Sens are honoring local Police & Rescue workers with Police & Rescue Worker Night. For tickets to any game this season, call the Senators at 231-4444 or log onto www.senatorsbaseball.com at any time to purchase tickets.
