Trenton rallies for 6-3 win over Portland on Saturday Night

(Trenton, NJ)-LF Edwar Gonzalez had the go-ahead two-run double, in his first game for Trenton, in a four-run 7th inning as the Thunder rallied for a 6-3 win over Portland on Saturday night at Waterfront Park. The win moves Trenton into a tie with Portland for first place in the Northern Division.

Down 3-2 in the 7th inning, Trenton (18-12) scored four runs off of Portland reliever Miguel Asencio (1-2). With one out, SS Ramiro Pena singled and advanced to second base on a walk by 2B Kevin Russo. CF Colin Curtis then delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. Gonzalez followed with a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Thunder a 5-3 lead. RF Jose Tabata capped off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to make it 6-3.

RHP Anthony Claggett (1-0) picked up the win in his first appearance for the Thunder, even though he gave up two unearned runs in the 7th inning. LHP Zach Kroenke tossed a scoreless 8th, and RHP J.B. Cox earned his first save of the season for the Thunder by tossing a 1-2-3 9th inning with two strikeouts. Thunder starting pitcher Jason Jones earned a no-decision. He went 6 IP and gave up 5 H and 1 unearned run. He struck out 3 and walked 3.

Trenton took a 2-0 lead off Portland starting pitcher Kris Johnson in the 3rd inning on a two-run home run by Curtis. The Sea Dogs countered with an unearned run in the 5th inning, and took the lead in the 7th inning by scoring two runs on a throwing error by Thunder 3B Carlos Mendoza.

Trenton will go for the sweep of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. LHP Chase Wright (4-1, 2.95) starts for Trenton against Portland LHP Dustin Richardson (3-2, 3.96).
