Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Arkansas Travelers hit four home runs and turned five double-plays, defeating the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 10-4 on Saturday night at Hammons Field.
Adam Morrissey had three hits, including two of Arkansas' season-high four home runs. Ben Johnson and Tim Duff also went deep for Arkansas, who pounded out 16 total hits against the Springfield pitching staff.
Cards' starter Clayton Mortensen (1-2), who hadn't given up a run at Hammons Field in two previous starts, was rocked for six runs in just 4 1/3 innings in suffering the defeat.
Tulsa struck for two runs in the second, as Jordan Czarniecki and Nate Sutton each picked up an RBI single, giving the Travs a 2-0 lead.
After the Cards cut the deficit in half with an unearned run in the second, the Travs got a two-run blast from Johnson, his fifth to go up 4-1.
Springfield rallied for a pair in the bottom of the fourth, as Mark Shorey knocked in two with a double, making it 4-3.
Adam Morrissey's first of two homers, a two-run shot to right field in the fifth, led to Mortensen's early departure, as the Travs took a 6-3 lead. Morrissey struck again off of Cards' reliever Fernando Salas, this time a solo shot for a 7-3 lead in the seventh.
Josh Dew allowed a pair of runs in the eighth, as Arkansas took a commanding 9-3 lead.
Springfield got their final run in the bottom of the eighth, as Mark Shorey's infield single knocked in Jose Martinez, making it 9-4.
Zack Zuercher gave up a solo shot to Duff to open the ninth, as Arkansas capped the scoring at 10-4.
Arkansas starter Anthony Ortega (3-2) gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits over six innings to earn the win.
The five double-plays that Springfield hit into on Saturday night is the most in franchise history.
Springfield (13-16) still has a share of first place in the North Division despite the loss. The Redbirds will try to get turned back around on Sunday afternoon, as they host the Travs for game two of the series at 2:10pm. Cards' right-hander PJ Walters was scheduled to start on Sunday for Springfield, but was promoted to Memphis during Saturday night's game. No starter has been named yet for Springfield. Arkansas will go with right-hander Bobby Mosebach (3-1) on Sunday afternoon. Sunday is "Pink in the Park" Day at Hammons Field, as we try to raise awareness for Breast Cancer in the Ozarks. 2,000 moms in attendance will also receive a free pink carnation thanks to our friends at Linda's Flowers, as we celebrate Mother's Day a few days early. Don't forget that the Cardinals are home through this Tuesday, as part of the eight-game home stand.
