Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Center fielder Kevin Thompson blooped an RBI single to short right field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and Indianapolis hung on for its ninth win in 10 tries -- a 3-2 decision over Norfolk -- Monday evening at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to 9-3 on the year and 4-0 at home, while the Tides fall to 5-7 overall and 0-4 on the road. The Tribe, which has won three consecutive one-run games, also registers its first four-game sweep since April 16-19, 2007.
Thompson's only hit of the night came after SS Josh Wilson walked and moved to second on a groundout. Thompson also registered the game-winning base knock -- a ninth-inning single -- in game three against Norfolk on Sunday afternoon. He finishes the four-game series 7-for-14 with four runs and three RBI.
Indianapolis evened the score with a run in the sixth after Norfolk pushed across two in the fifth. 1B Matt Kata (2-for-4, 1 R) opened the frame with a double to left and scored on DH Craig Wilson's two bagger to left.
Tides 2B Eider Torres (3-for-4, 2 RBI) highlighted the fifth with a two-run single to right. The base knock scored DH Adam Stern (2-for-4, 1 R), who singled to center, and CF Sebastien Boucher, who walked.
Tribe C Raul Chavez extended his season-best hitting streak to seven games with a fifth-inning single.
Indians RHP Romulo Sanchez (3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 SO), RHP Jonah Bayliss (1.0 IP, 1 BB) and LHP Sean Burnett (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) combined for five scoreless innings of relief. Sanchez improved to 2-0 with the win, while Bayliss picked up his first hold and Burnett notched his third save.
The Indianapolis bullpen has now allowed just one run over its last 29.2 innings.
Neither starter -- Norfolk LHP Garrett Olson (5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) or Indianapolis RHP Jason Davis (4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) -- figured in the decision.
Tides RHP Andy Mitchell (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB) fell to 2-1 with the loss.
Indianapolis continues its eight-game homestand with a four-game set against Pawtucket. Indians RHP Ty Taubenheim and RHP David Pauley are the probables for Tuesday's series opener at 7 p.m.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
Post-game quotes -- INF Matt Kata
(what about Kevin Thompson coming up with game-winning hits the last two days?) "Kevin (Thompson) has done a terrific job for us. When you have a hot hand and come up in those situations, you will always take it."
(how do you feel about three straight one-run wins?) "These three one-run wins show a lot about our team. The bullpen keeps shutting the door, guys are making great plays in the field, and the offense is coming up with timely hits."
(do you feel like things are turning around for you at the plate?) "Early in the season, it's all about rhythm and timing. You need to grind out those at-bats and search for that feel. The hits will eventually fall if you keep getting the barrel (of the bat) on the ball."
