Bees Endure In Another Slugfest

April 12, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release

SALT LAKE CITY - Brandon Wood had two home runs, and Matt Brown hit a two-run double during a decisive seventh-inning rally that gave the Salt Lake Bees an 11-10 victory over the Portland Beavers Saturday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field.

Brown hit his fourth home run of the campaign, Bradley Coon had four hits and Kendry Morales was 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Bees, who tallied 17 hits and improved to 9-1 on the year.

Salt Lake had early leads of 4-0 and 6-3, but the Beavers (4-5) put up three runs each in the second, third and sixth inning to go ahead.

Wood's second home run of the game - his league-leading sixth of the season - trimmed the margin in the bottom of the sixth. Then, trailing 9-7 in the seventh, the Bees got to reliever Mike Adams for four runs, sending eight batters to the plate and turning a two-run deficit into a two-run lead. Terry Evans, who reached on a leadoff error by shortstop Luis Rodriguez, and Morales scored on Brown's double to start the rally. Adam Pavkovich plated Brown with a double over the head of left fielder Chase Headley, and Gary Patchett's RBI single put the Bees up 11-9.

Headley's first Triple-A home run - a leadoff solo blast off Jose Arredondo in the ninth - cut the Beavers' deficit to a run. The Beavers then had a runner at third base with two outs in the inning, but Nick Hundley grounded out to end the game.

Adams (0-1), who allowed just one run over his first three appearances, suffered the loss, the first decision for a Portland reliever in 2008.

Henry Bonilla (1-0) was credited with the win after giving up three runs (2 earned) over two innings of relief. Despite yielding Headley's home run in the ninth, Arredondo picked up the save, his fourth of the year.

Will Venable had four hits - including two doubles and a triple - to lead the Beavers. Venable, who scored three times Saturday, is 9-for-18 (.500) with five doubles and five RBIs over his last four games.

Brian Myrow hit his second home run of the season, and Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Portland seized the lead in the sixth. Venable sparked the go-ahead effort, leading off with his second double of the game. Craig Stansberry walked and Hundley singled to load the bases for Rodriguez, who drove in Venable with an RBI single. Stansberry scored when Oscar Robles grounded into a double play and Hundley came in from third to make it 9-6 when right fielder Terry Evans dropped a fly ball off the bat of Jody Gerut with two outs.

The teams picked up where they left off Friday night when they combined for 20 runs and 31 hits. Back-to-back solo homers off starter Wade LeBlanc by Brown and Wood highlighted a four-run bottom of the first for the Bees.

Brown, who hit for the cycle Wednesday at Tucson, has scored in each of the Bees' first 10 games and has hit safely in all but one of those contests.

Venable doubled for a fourth straight game, driving in Myrow for the Beavers' first run in the second. Rodriguez and Robles added RBI singles in the inning as Portland chipped away at the Salt Lake lead.

Morales' two-out, two-run single pushed the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the second, but Portland rallied to tie the game in the third, getting a two-run homer from Myrow and an RBI groundout from Stansberry that scored Venable, who reached on a one-out triple.

The Beavers and Bees meet again Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. (Pacific).

NOTES: Edgar Gonzalez had a five-game hitting streak snapped by going 0-for-3 with two walks ... Rodriguez extended his team-best hitting streak to six games ... Headley is the ninth different Beavers batter to hit a home run this season. The ninth batter to go deep in 2007 was Paul McAnulty on May 13 ... the Beavers rank among the best hitting clubs in the PCL with a .300 team batting average.
