Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA- Pittsburgh Steelers' placekicker Jeff Reed has been added to the Altoona Curve's 2008 "Pittsburgh Gridiron Greats Series" and will make an appearance at Blair County Ballpark on Thursday, June 5th, when the Curve host the New Britain Rock Cats (AA/Minnesota Twins) at 7:05 p.m. Reed will "kick off" that night's game by tossing out a ceremonial first pitch and will also make a guest appearance on the Curve GameDay Show before meeting and greeting fans and signing autographs throughout the evening.
Reed joins Jerome Bettis, Rocky Bleier and Louis Lipps as current or former Steelers who are scheduled to visit Blair County Ballpark during the 2008 season. Bettis attended the Curve's Home Opener last Thursday, helping the club draw a franchise-record crowd of over 6,700 to BCB. Bleier, a running back on each of the Steelers' four Super Bowl title teams of the 1970s, will make his scheduled appearance on Saturday, May 24th, when Altoona hosts the Trenton Thunder (AA/New York Yankees) at 7:05 p.m. Lipps, who was a star wide receiver for the Black and Gold in the mid-to-late 1980s, will visit the ballpark on Saturday, July 5th for the 7:05 p.m. game with the Harrisburg Senators (AA/Washington Nationals).
Reed first took over as the Steelers' placekicker midway through the 2002 season and has established himself as one of the National Football League's most accurate legs. The 29-year old from the University of North Carolina enters the 2008 season having converted on nearly 82 percent of his career field goal attempts and all but two of his career extra-point attempts. In 2007, Reed placed second among NFL kickers by converting on 92 percent of his field goal opportunities (23-of-25) and also was a perfect 44-for-44 on PAT's. He has been part of four Steeler teams which reached the AFC playoffs, including the 2005 team, which earned Pittsburgh's first Super Bowl title since 1979.
