Tulsa Drillers News Release
The NCAA Men's Basketball Championship was not the only game in San Antonio Monday night decided in overtime. The Tulsa Drillers and the San Antonio Missions needed 12 innings to decide a winner, with the Drillers pushing across a run in the top of the 12th to post a 1-0 victory. It was almost a night of missed chances for the Drillers, who out-hit the Missions 13-4 but stranded 17 base runners.
The 12th inning rally began with a one-out single by Daniel Carte. Jeff Kindel followed with another single, putting runners at the corners. Eric Young Jr. then provided the game's only run with an infield single that deflected off the leg of pitcher Neil Jamison, allowing Carte to race home with the deciding run. It was Young's fourth hit of the night.
The Missions threatened in the bottom of the 12th off Tulsa reliever Ryan Mattheus, who was pitching for the second consecutive day for the first time in his professional career. With runners at first and third and two outs, Mattheus retired Drew Macias on a pop out to end the game.
Tulsa manager Stu Cole used seven different pitchers to post the shutout. Starter Tomas Santiago blanked the Missions on only one hit through the first four innings. Eduardo Valdez, who just joined the team on Monday, pitched two hitless innings as did Jarrett Grube. Valdez replaced Matt Daley, who was promoted to Triple A Colorado Springs.
Casey Weathers, Pedro Strop and Adam Bright worked one inning each with Bright collecting the win. For Mattheus, it was his first pro save.
The Drillers will conclude their first road trip of the season Tuesday afternoon in San Antonio. Alan Johnson will make his second start of the season against Michael Ekstrom of the Missions. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05PM.
