Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce that over $22,000 has been raised in this year's Westman Dreams for Kids Campaign.
This past season, the Wheat Kings scored 258 goals, second most in the WHL's Eastern Conference and third in the WHL, helping to generate close to $10,000 for the Foundation, which was formed in 1991 to help make dreams come true for western Manitoba children suffering from life threatening diseases.
"Goals for Kids" was established the following year and has raised over $250,000 since that time.
This year's total of $22,300 includes the generous support of Paterson Grain as well as money raised from last summer's Marty Murray Celebrity Golf Tournament in Melita. A former captain of the Wheat kings, Murray has been heavily involved with "Goals for Kids" since his playing days with Brandon.
As in past years, several local businesses served as corporate sponsors this past year. Each time, the Wheat Kings scored a goal or Brandon recorded a shutout, these sponsors would donate at least $25 to the Foundation.
The Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation is a non-profit, local registered organization dedicated to granting dreams to seriously ill children throughout western Manitoba.
In addition to Paterson Grain, the local partners included Total Eye Care, Lennon Trilogy, Paterson, Patterson, Wyman & Abel, Roy, Johnston and Co., Advance Auto Body, Action Power, Morningstar Metals, J & G Supply, Forbidden Flavours, Source for Sports, Emco Waterworks, C & C Rentals, Wheat City Roofing, Northside Mazda, Brandon Business Interiors, Summit Promotions, BDO Dunwoody, Scott Ball of Precision Toyota, Jason Kreiser of the Keystone Centre, Al Rosendaal of Investors Group, Parthenon Pizza, Shoppers Drug Mart, Kuipers Family Bakery, Dr. Brian Kiliwnik and Overland Waste and Recycling.
Local product Tyler Dittmer's team leading 32 goals generated $800 for "Goals for Kids". Rookie sensation Brayden Schenn's 28 goals generated another $700.
In on ice news, the Wheat Kings continue to prepare for their opening round playoff series against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Games one and two of their best of seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series will be played Friday and Saturday nights in Lethbridge, before shifting to Brandon's Westman Communications Group Place for games three, four and five (if necessary) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights.
The Brandon - Lethbridge series is a 2-3-2 playoff format due to the fact that the Keystone Centre is hosting the 101st Annual Royal Manitoba Winter Fair the following week.
