Everett Silvertips News Release
The Everett Silvertips' quest for home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs took a blow as they were defeated at home Wednesday night by the Tri-City Americans by a 3-1 score in front of 6,090 fans. The loss, coupled with the Kelowna Rockets' win at home against Chilliwack, dropped Everett to sixth place overall in the Western Conference, one point behind Kelowna and four points behind Seattle. Everett still has one game in hand on Kelowna.
After a scoreless first period in which goaltender Leland Irving turned aside 22 Tri-City shots, it was the Americans that broke onto the scoreboard with Colton Yellow Horn's league-leading 48th goal of the season, coming off a -5 performance at home against Everett last week. The goal, assisted by Eric Mestery and Kruise Reddick, came on the power play at the 7:56 mark.
Following a successful 5-on-3 penalty kill, Vitaly Karamnov was pulled down on a breakway, necessitating an Everett penalty shot. Karamnov was stopped by a Chet Pickard glove save to keep Everett off the scoreboard an 0/4 in penalty shots this season.
Everett eventually found the equalizer on a delayed penalty when Matt Ius confidently strode down the right wing side of the ice, drifted behind the net and found a wide open Zack Dailey, who slammed the Ius feed past Pickard from the low slot at the 14:21 mark for his sixth goal of the year.
With a 1-1 tie heading into the third, Tri-City was able to produce some sustained intensity, keeping the puck in Everett territory for the opening minutes of the period. Off a scramble in front, Adam Hughesman poked a loose puck past Irving for the rookie's seventeenth goal of the season, with assists to Reddick and Taylor Procyshen at the 4:08 mark.
Everett pulled Irving to no avail; despite a scramble in front of the net, the âTips were unable to put anything past Pickard as the puck eventually drifted out of the zone and onto Shaun Vey's stick, who snapped it into the empty net for his 27th of the year to complete the scoring.
Irving stopped 44 of 46 to garner Awards of Praise First Star honors, while Pickard was solid, stopping 23 of 24.
