February 28, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - They were some of the best players the game has ever seen. Names like Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron and Josh Gibson.

All of them black. All part of the Negro Leagues.

All have been immortalized previously in both the spoken and written word. Add one more piece to the list, this one to have an Asheville Connection.

During the week of March 11-15, a series of events is planned to pay tribute to baseball's African-American heroes. The week's crowning event will be on Saturday, March 15 at 8:00 p.m. at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in the Asheville Civic Center. There, the Asheville Symphony Orchestra will feature a composition by Richard Danielpour, called "Pastime." This piece specifically focuses on Robinson, Aaron and Gibson, but is meant to give a bigger appreciation for the trials, tribulations and triumphs of all those who played in the Negro Leagues.

Leading up to the Saturday performance, various community organizations will play a role in teaching and inspiriting area citizens about Asheville's rich black history in baseball. That includes poetry contests about this subject at Asheville High, Asheville Middle and Hall Fletcher Elementary. The winners will be acknowledged by their schools, win several prizes, including Tourists tickets and Tourists Bucks, and will be recognized at the Saturday concert.

On Tuesday, March 11, UNCA will host their own free celebration including music from the university's Big Band. That will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Lipinsky Hall (018).

Asheville has a long and storied history of black baseball. It's with much pride that 14 different community units will work in concert to let everyone know the many contributions that blacks made in the sport.
