Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- Representatives of the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation will be at the Keystone Centre Wednesday night to accept a generous donation on behalf of the Goals for Kids Campaign, from a former captain of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

A former member of the Calgary Flames, Philadelpia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes and Los Angeles Kings, Marty Murray is currently playing for Lugano of the Swiss Elite League. During last summer's 5th Annual Marty Murray Golf Tournament in Melita, a total of $12,000 was raised for Goals for Kids. The cheque presentation will be made before the start of the second period of Wednesday's Western Hockey League game between the Wheat Kings and visiting Chilliwack Bruins.

Chosen the WHL's Player of the Year in 1995, Murray scored 132 goals and 392 points in 264 career games and is the seventh highest scorer in franchise history.

The annual tournament has been a tremendous success over the years and has attracted a who's who of hockey personalities. Among those hitting the links last July in Melita were Murray, Ryan Craig of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Wheat Kings assistant coaches Dwayne Gylywoychuk and Darren Ritchie as well as former Wheat Kings Mike Maneluk, Don Dietrich and Mark Derlago. Current Wheat King Tyler Dittmer and Jacob Dietrich of the Portland Winter Hawks also attended the prestigious event.

In the five years that Marty has hosted his hockey celebrity tournament in Melita, $8,000 has been generated for Goals for Kids. Besides enry fees and corporate donations, the money was raised from a silent auction and raffle.

As a result of last summer's tournament, $9,500 will be donated to the Westman Dreams for Kids while $2,500 will go towards a local Pool project in Melita.

Making the presentation to Goals for Kids on Wednesday will be the Chairman of the Marty Murray Charity Golf Classic, Wayne Higgins.

On the ice, Chilliwack will be making their first ever appearance at Westman Place on Wednesday night. While the Bruins are third in the B.C. division with 60 points in 62 games this season, the Wheat Kings entered the week tied with Swift Current for second place in the Eastern Division - four points back of the front running Regina Pats - with two games in hand. Brandon is currently 36-22-2-2 and playing game four of a 6-game WHL home stand.

Tickets to Wednesday's game against the Bruins as well as this weekend's games against Lethbridge on Friday and Calgary on Saturday are on sale now at the Keystone box office. Fans can also purchase on line at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 726-3555.
