Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, announced today that the team has entered into an affiliation with the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League.
The teams began the new working relationship when the Hurricanes sent goaltender, Daniel Manzato to Charlotte. Manzato, 6-foot-1, 178 pounds, hails from Fribourg Goteron, Switzerland and was drafted by the Hurricanes in the fifth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He has played the last four seasons in the Swiss-A league and started this season with the Florida Everblades but didn't play.
"We feel that Daniel is a good young prospect and can be a nice fit with the Checkers," said Hurricanes assistant general manager and director of player development, Ron Francis. "We hope he will enter their lineup and play well enough to be kept around all season. We are happy he is in a great market like Charlotte and we look forward to his development."
"We're grateful to the Hurricanes for partnering with the Checkers - in particular the work of Jim Rutherford and Ron Francis," remarked Wilkinson. "We look forward to Daniel's arrival and the continued growth of hockey in the Carolinas."
The New York Rangers remain the primary NHL affiliate of the Checkers.
The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Nov. 7 against the Augusta Lynx. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399. The Checkers are accepting deposits on all ticket packages. For season ticket information, please call 704-342-4-ICE or visit www.gocheckers.com.
