Great Lakes Loons News Release
For the third straight game, a big inning doomed the Great Lakes Loons as they lost the final game of the 2007 season to the Fort Wayne Wizards in front of 5,515 fans at Dow Diamond by a score of 6-2.
The crowd pushed the Loons' season attendance total to 324,564 fans in the first season, including 30 sellouts.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Fort Wayne struck for two runs on a Paul Coleman wild pitch and an RBI-single by Jodam Rivera to make it 2-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Loons answered with a pair of runs of their own when Francisco Lizarraga drove in the Loons' first run on a RBI-groundout. After Lizarraga stole second base, Trayvon Robinson followed with a long drive, high off the wall in left field. The double drove home Lizarraga to tie the game at two.
But in the eighth, Loons reliever Blake Brannon allowed an RBI-single to Wizards catcher Luis Martinez to push across a Fort Wayne run to make it 3-2. After a strikeout of Matt Stocco, Wizards designated hitter Brian Lauderdale belted a three-run home run to left to blow the game open and put Fort Wayne ahead by a score of 6-2, a lead the Wizards would never relinquish.
Coleman started the ballgame and pitched five innings allowing two runs and striking out five. Miguel Sanfler came on in relief and pitched two hitless, scoreless innings while striking out four. Brannon (2-2) picked up his second loss of the season when he came on relief and allowed four runs in his only inning of work. Joe Jones pitched the final inning in the ballgame.
Allen Harrington went six innings allowing two runs without walking a batter and struck out four. Tyler Axelrod (2-1) worked two innings in picking up the win for the Wizards, his second of the season.
After the ballgame an on-field ceremony commemorated the 2007 season with a highlight video followed by speeches from Loons manager Lance Parrish and president and general manager Paul Barbeau. Loons players shook hands with fans as they exited Dow Diamond following the post-game fireworks show.
The Loons would like to thank all fans for their wonderful support during the 2007 season and look forward to another season of Great Lakes Loons baseball in April 2008.
