Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Home plate has suddenly become a stranger to the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
The Asheville Tourists beat the Hoppers 3-1 Thursday night at First Horizon Park before a crowd of 8,371. That came on the heels of a 3-0 shutout by the Tourists Wednesday.
"One run in 18 innings," Hoppers manager Edwin Rodriguez said, shaking his head. "There's no answer for it. Twice tonight we had men on third base with less than two outs and the next man struck out.
"It's situational hitting, and we're not executing that right now. The pitchers have been doing an excellent job. Asheville scored 12 runs in four games."
The Hoppers had averaged 7.3 runs per game in their first 20 home games this season.
Darrell McCall (2-4) was the hard-luck loser for the Hoppers. After giving up a two-run homer to Victor Ferrante in the second inning, McCall settled into a groove and at one point retired 11 straight batters. In seven innings he gave up four hits and struck out seven with one walk.
Ferrante also accounted for the final Asheville run with an RBI single for an insurance run in the ninth.
Andy Graham (5-3) picked up the win for the Tourists, throwing six innings and striking out seven. Craig Baker and Thomas Baumgardner finished up, with Baumgardner earning his fourth save.
The Hoppers' only run came on an RBI single by Justin Webb in the fourth inning, scoring Scott Cousins. Greensboro wasted some other chances, especially in the second inning when it loaded the bases with one out but stranded all three runners. Webb struck out and Greg Burns hit into a force play.
Rodriguez was ejected from the game in the sixth inning by base umpire Jason Kaminsky.
The Hoppers dropped to 27-20 and Asheville improved to 31-15.
The Hoppers open a four-game series against Kannapolis Friday at 7 p.m. in First Horizon.
