Hagerstown Suns News Release
Lakewood, NJ: The Hagerstown Suns defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 8-6 at FirstEnergy Park on Thursday night, Chris Marrero and Leonard Davis went back-to-back as the Suns complete a winning road trip.
The Suns (20-27) got on the board first against 'Claws' starter Edgar Garcia (1-3) when Francisco Guzman ripped a two-run single in the 2nd to make it 2-0. However, the 'Claws (23-21) tied it up in the home half with two runs of their own when Suns' starter Don Levinski (1-1) walked home a run and yielded a RBI single to CF Julian Williams. The Suns took the lead for good in the 3rd inning when Chris Marrero hit a two-out RBI double to plate Justin Maxwell who led off the inning with a double of his own. Levinski was then lifted after 5 innings, as the Suns had a 3-2 lead. Levinski went 5 innings, yielding 3 hits, 5 walks, while striking out 2. The Suns opened it up in the 6th when Chris Marrero and Leonard Davis went back-to-back to give the Suns a 5-2 lead. For Marrero, it was his 11th homerun of the season and the Suns' 1st homerun at FirstEnergy Park this season. Davis hit a line-shot drive over the right-field wall, his 7th. The Suns added one more in the 7th on a RBI single by newcomer, LF Sheldon Fulse, and two more in the 8th on a run scoring wild pitch and a RBI single by Francisco Guzman.
Greg Bunn pitched the middle 3 innings and was outstanding, yielding only one hit and one walk. Bunn hasn't allowed a run in his last six appearances. The Suns held Ryan Howard, the NL MVP of 2006, hitless as Howard went 0-3, with a walk in his second rehab appearance for the 'Claws. Josh Wilkie came on in the 9th inning with a six-run lead and didn't have it. Josh allowed four runs on five hits, but struck out Adrian Cardenas with the tying run in scoring position for the win. The Suns snapped a three-game losing streak and will come to Hagerstown on Friday with a winning road trip in their back pocket. After taking 4 of 5 from the Captains, they salvage the finale in Lakewood to go 5-4 on the 9-day, 8 game trip.
Tomorrow, the Suns open up a weekend series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Municipal Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35PM. The Suns are a single-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals and are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties.
