Tucson No-Hits Beavers Through Seven In 5-2 Win
May 23, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Dustin Nippert struck out five, Adam Bass retired all 12 batters he faced, and the Tucson Sidewinders held the Portland Beavers hitless until the eighth inning in a 5-2 victory before 6,623 Wednesday afternoon at PGE Park.
It wasn't until Royce Huffman's infield single off Bill Murphy in the bottom of the eighth inning that the Beavers (20-25) were able to get a hit against the Sidewinders (23-22).
Bass (2-1) picked up the victory, entering the game in the third inning and working four innings of perfect relief. The Sidewinders limited Portland to just one base runner over the first seven innings and three hits total in the game.
Pete Laforest saved the Beavers from their third shutout loss of the season by belting a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
A double by Jeff Salazar and an RBI single by Chris Carter gave the Sidewinders a 1-0 lead in the first. Tucson added to that in the third as Alex Romero singled and scored on a sac fly by Salazar.
In the sixth, Augie Ojeda added an RBI single and Rich Thompson reached on a bunt single to score Mark Johnson.
D'Antona tacked on an RBI double in the ninth.
Mike Thompson dropped to 0-5 on the year by giving up four runs and eight hits in five innings of work.
The series and homestand conclude Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Infielder Craig Stansberry missed his fifth straight game with a sprained middle finger on his right hand ... the Beavers drew 14,652 in their back-to-back school days Tuesday and Wednesday. Portland will surpass 100,000 in attendance during the next homestand ... Laforest's last three homers have come in the ninth inning.
