RiverHawks, Patrick help raise nearly $70,000 for MDA

July 19, 2006 - Frontier League (FL) - Rockford RiverHawks News Release

LOVES PARK, Ill. ¬- The Rockford RiverHawks have helped raise nearly $70,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association this season.

Tuesday night's appearance by racing star Danica Patrick at RiverHawks Stadium generated almost $45,000 by itself, the RiverHawks and the MDA announced Wednesday.

The Indy Racing League star, a Roscoe native, signed copies of her book, "Danica: Crossing the Line." prior to the game. The RiverHawks played the game in jerseys inspired by Patrick's racing suit. Patrick signed each jersey before the game. The jerseys were sold at auction following the game, with fans taking the shirts right off the backs of the players, who also autographed each jersey. Proceeds from the event benefited the MDA.

"The MDA is very excited to bring a major celebrity back home and showcase RiverHawks Stadium," MDA Event Coordinator Shondra Winebaugh said. "The strong partnership with the RiverHawks has already raised nearly $70,000 this year in the fight against neuromuscular disease. The MDA is looking forward to future projects with the RiverHawks."

The live postgame auction generated approximately $13,000 for the MDA. An earlier silent auction brought in about $3,500 and a raffle earned about $1,700. The MDA grossed $44,862 from the RiverHawks Stadium event.

"I thought it was great to see the support of the community," RiverHawks general manager Josh Olerud said. "In that same regard, it was great to see Danica Patrick was enjoying herself spending an entire day here when she has so little time off."

This year's partnership between the RiverHawks and the MDA has generated a total of $69,682 so far.
