Lynx Open With A Win! Birkins Terrific In Ottawa 4-1 Victory

The Ottawa Lynx opened the 2006 season on the right foot as they scored single runs in four separate innings on route to a 4-1 victory over the Louisville Bats on the Opening night of the 2006 Lynx baseball season.

Keith Reed and Alejandro Freire each had two hits for the Lynx, who received an outstanding pitching performance from LHP Kurt Birkins. Birkins, making his Triple-A debut, gave up only one run on three hits in 5.0 innings to collect his first win. Julio Manon pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save.

Player Of The Game: LHP Kurt Birkins gave up three hits and one run over 5.0 innings, picking up his first win of the season.

Game Recap: The Lynx scored the season's first run in the bottom of the second inning. Alejandro Freire led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on Keith Reed's line drive double to left. The Lynx added a run in the 4th, with Freire again leading off the inning with a walk. One out later Val Majewski worked a walk and a Keith Reed single would load the bases. Eli Whiteside then lofted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Freire to put the Lynx up by two. Louisville cut the lead in half when Jeff Bannon homered to left with one out in the 5th off of Kurt Birkins. The Lynx replied quickly in the bottom half when Napoleon Calzado was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Andy Tracy's single through the hole on the right. Ottawa added an insurance run in
