Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
TORONTO, ON (March 10, 2006) - St. Michael's Majors alumnus Murray Costello will be performing the ceremonial puck drop prior to the St. Mike's-Kingston game on Sunday afternoon. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November, as a Builder. As a result, his place on the St. Michael's College School Wall of Fame is being unveiled on Sunday, in the Molson Lounge, during the 1st intermission. Sunday's puck drop takes place at the traditional time of 2:00 pm.
Costello was a student at St. Michael's College School from 1950-53 during which time he starred for the Majors, collecting 105 points in 107 games. His subsequent NHL career consisted of stops in Chicago, Boston and Detroit between 1953 and 1957 where he generated 32 points in 162 contests.
After hanging up his blades, he graduated from law school before joining the Western Hockey League as Publicity Director. He later became General Manager of the WHL's Seattle Totems. However, he firmly established his legacy through his role as President of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (now Hockey Canada) from 1979 to 1998. Since then, he has become heavily involved with the International Ice Hockey Federation and the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Joining Costello for this special occasion will be former coach John "Peanuts" O'Flaherty, and teammates from the 1953 Majors team, including Dick Duff, Les Duff, Gerry McNamara and Jack Dockeray.
The Majors visit the Sudbury Wolves tonight at 7:30 pm before returning home to entertain the Frontenacs on Sunday afternoon (March 12th) at 2:00 pm. The latter contest will be broadcast on Rogers television in the Toronto region, channel 10 or 63, and webcast at www.stmichaelsmajors.com. Unfortunately, tonight's game will not be covered by Rogers television and the webcast will not be available due to last-minute technical difficulties. The Majors apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Majors tickets can be purchased through the team's office at (416) 651-8228, by calling Ticketmaster at (416) 872-5000, online at www.ticketmaster.ca or by stopping by the St. Michael's College School Arena box office within two hours of the puck drop. Group tickets (20 people or more) can be obtained for as low as $7.
