Wheaties announce Janz scholarship plans

February 20, 2006 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- Fresh off a critical home and home series with the Prince Albert Raiders, in which they collected three of a possible four points, the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that applications are now being accepted for the Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship.

The Scholarship is awarded to the Grade 12 student from western Manitoba who plans to continue their education at Brandon University or in a Diploma program at Assiniboine Community College.

In order to qualify for the Scholarship, students must submit an essay outlining their community volunteer participation. Applicants are asked to please attach a transcript of student marks and also a reference letter from their teacher, counselor, volunteer supervisor or employer.

Maggie was a dedicated volunteer in Brandon for numerous community service groups, including the Wheat Kings. Many nights when the wind was howling and the snow was falling, she would be at the Keystone Centre to promote and sell 50/50 tickets, raising money for the Players Education Fund and sharing that delightful smile with our fans.

Twelve years ago, she was in a fatal bus accident while vacationing in Austria. The following year, the hockey club established the Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship as a tribute to her memory. In 1997, the Wheat Kings Foundation was set up and the team continued on with the scholarship.

The Scholarship consists of the hockey team's profits from the 50/50 draw during the Wheat Kings' final regular season game - Friday, March 17th - against the visiting Regina Pats.

Since it's inception, the Scholarship has awarded well over $10,000 to students furthering their education. Applications can be dropped off at the Wheat Kings' office at the Keystone Centre or mailed to #2-1175 18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7C5.

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 10th 2006.

In other news, today is the deadline for minor hockey players to enter to become one of two Honorary Captains for this Sunday's Investors Group - Wheat Kings' Skills Day at the Keystone Centre. In addition to having the opportunity to join the players on the ice for the annual event, each Honorary Captain will take home an autographed replica jersey.

Fans can enter by visiting the team's official web site, located at www.wheatkings.com

On the ice, the Wheat Kings 3-game road trip continues Tuesday night in Medicine Hat against the Tigers. Brandon enters the week sitting in the fourth and final playoff spot in the WHL's Eastern Division - three points ahead of the Prince Albert Raiders.

Brandon's next home game is Saturday night when they play host to Derek LeBlanc and the visiting Calgary Hitmen. Tickets to that game are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or on line at ticketmaster.ca. Saturday is also another Sport Chek Family Night. The Family package consists of two adult, two youth tickets, four Maple Leaf hot dogs, four soft drinks and four programs for just $40 plus GST. See store for details.
