August 3, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The New York Mets have announced that second baseman Kaz Matsui will rehab with the Binghamton Mets during their series against the Portland Sea Dogs this weekend at NYSEG Stadium.

The 29-year-old Matsui has been on the disabled list since June 21st with a bruised right knee that he hurt while turning a double play June 16th at Oakland. The Osaka, Japan native was hitting .234 with three home runs and 21 RBI in 58 games with the Mets at the time of his injury after hitting .272 in 114 games with New York as a rookie in 2004.

Matsui's already played in three rehab games with the Rookie Gulf Coast League Mets, going 4 for 9 with a homer and three RBI. The B-Mets are scheduled to play doubleheaders against Portland Friday and Saturday, with Matsui starting the first game of each twinbill. He's also expected to start in Binghamton's series finale against Portland on Sunday.

Matsui is the second New York Met to rehab in Binghamton this season. Righthanded pitcher Steve Trachsel started for the B-Mets last Saturday vs. Akron and is expected to start again this coming Saturday in the first game of the doubleheader with Portland.

After games at Harrisburg tonight and Thursday afternoon, the B-Mets return to NYSEG Stadium for a nine-game homestand against the Portland Sea Dogs and Norwich Navigators. The B-Mets will play doubleheaders against Portland Friday and Saturday with each starting at 5:30. The series with the Sea Dogs concludes with a day game Sunday, beginning at 1:30.
