Orioles Claim OF Matt Diaz From Tampa Bay

February 22, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Ottawa Lynx News Release

OTTAWA- The Baltimore Orioles today announced that they have added another player with significant Triple-A experience, when they claimed slugging OF MATT DIAZ off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. A 26-year-old outfielder, Diaz has five days to accept this claim or become a free agent.

If Diaz accepts the claim and returns to Triple-A, the Lynx instantly pick up one of the International League's most feared hitters. Diaz was named as Triple-A Durham's player of the year in 2004 after batting .302 (2nd in the IL) with 21 home runs and 93 RBI. Diaz also led the league with 47 doubles and was second in slugging percentage at .571, exploits that landed him on the 2004 IL All-Star team.

The addition of Diaz to the Lynx lineup would be the second significant addition from the Tampa Bay organization in this offseason, after they picked up 2004 IL All-Star Midre Cummings as a free agent in January.

The 2005 Lynx home opener is only 52 days away, as Ottawa will take on their North Division rival the Rochester Red Wings in a special opening day doubleheader on Saturday, April 16th at 1:05 pm.
