INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indianapolis Indians General Manager Cal Burleson has announced the hiring of 2004 Southern League Broadcaster of the Year Robert Portnoy, who will serve as a radio broadcaster and account executive for the Tribe.

Portnoy will join longtime "Voice of the Tribe" and 2002 Indiana Sportscaster of the Year Howard Kellman, handling the play-by-play for the middle innings of all 144 regular-season games, which will be carried by ESPN 950-AM.

"Robert is a seasoned baseball broadcaster who our fans will find very enjoyable," Burleson says. "He possesses an excellent knowledge of the game, and his call is exciting. Robert's experience in a sales capacity will also serve the Indians well. We are happy that he is with us."

Portnoy comes to Indianapolis after a two-year stint (2003-04) as director of broadcasting and sales for the Huntsville (Ala.) Stars. During his time with the Milwaukee Brewers' Double-A affiliate, Portnoy served as the radio play-by-play "Voice of the Stars" and handled all aspects of media relations and corporate sales.

In Huntsville, Portnoy also spent two years as an on-air personality for ESPN 1450-AM and one winter as a weekend sports anchor for WAAY-TV 31. Prior to arriving in the Yellowhammer State, Portnoy spent three seasons (2000-02) as director of broadcasting and media relations for the Kinston (N.C.) Indians. In addition to serving as the radio play-by-play voice of Cleveland's Single-A affiliate, Portnoy was responsible for selling tickets, signage and advertising.

Portnoy began his professional career by spending two years (1998-99) as radio play-by-play voice of the San Jose (Calif.) Giants and an on-air personality at KSJS 90.5-FM in San Jose.

A graduate of Stanford University, Portnoy also spent time as a contributing sportswriter for the Huntsville Times, Goldsboro (N.C.) New Argus and Kinston (N.C.) Free Press.

The Indians open their 2005 campaign April 7, when the Pawtucket Red Sox visit Victory Field for a 2 p.m. matinee. Great rates for season tickets are currently available by calling the Indians Box Office at 317-269-3545. Individual game tickets go on sale March 1 at 10 a.m.
