WINNIPEG, MB â The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today added an import offensive lineman to its practice roster with the acquisition of Keith Chatelain.
Chatelain (6-5, 310, Kentucky '02, DOB: May 4, 1981 in Metairie, LA) joins the Big Blue after attending mini-camps for the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL.
THE NFL YEARS â SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS â 2004
Following the completion of his college football career, Chatelain tried to secure a NFL job with the San Francisco 49ers. He attended several of the Niners mini-camps and was waiting for a contract offer when the Blue Bombers signed him.
THE COLLEGE YEARS â KENTUCKY WILDCATS
Chatelain played four years of U.S. College Football for the University of Kentucky Wildcats.
He proved to be a versatile lineman, playing mostly at guard but also seeing duty in his sophomore year at centre. In that second season, Chatelain snapped for a shotgun offence that led the SEC in total offence (445.5 yards per game) and passing offence (335.4 yards per game).
THE HIGH-SCHOOL YEARS â RUMMEL RAIDERS
Chatelain was a three-year starter at offensive tackle for the Rummel High School Raiders in Metairie, Louisiana. He led his school to three-straight appearances in the Louisiana AAAAA State Championships.
SuperPrep named him one of the Top-40 prospects in the state in his senior year. PrepStar Magazine named him to its All-American Team. A team captain as a senior, Chatelain was an All-Metro All-Star choice and a Louisiana State Top-10 player.
In his junior year, he led an offensive line on the most prolific offence in school history. The Raiders had one runningback who rushed for more than 2,000 yards and another who topped 1,000 yards.
He played basketball for two years and participated in track-and-field in his senior year.
Chatelain was also a standout in the classroom, as he was a member of the National Honor Society and was on his school's honor roll. He was a very active in community service as a Big Brother Mentoring Program member, Operation Head volunteer, Senior Christian Leadership Group participant and Project Greater Hope member.
