Published on August 4, 2004 under Northern League (NL) News Release

The Northern League of Professional Baseball announced today that the Anaheim Angels have purchased the contract of righthanded pitcher Dominic Woody from the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

Woody, the 16th Northern Leaguer to be purchased by a major league organization this season, will be assigned to the Angels' class A Rancho Cucamonga club in the California League. He is the first Gary player to be sold in 2004.

Woody, in his sixth professional season, joins Anaheim after becoming a full-time pitcher less than two months ago. The 25-year-old started the 2004 season as a reserve catcher and utility player for the RailCats, batting .200 with five extra base hits in 55 at bats. Known for his defensive skills and strong throwing arm, he spent the early part of the season working with Gary manager Garry Templeton and pitching coach Wally Widelski on his mechanics. Woody displayed a fastball in the low-to-mid 90's with a slider and curveball.

Woody made his debut on the mound on June 7 at Winnipeg, pitching a perfect inning with two strikeouts. He compiled a 1.78 era in 14 relief appearances before joining the RailCats rotation on July 15, allowing two runs in eight innings and recording his first professional win that night at Lincoln. The righthander issued two runs in 8.2 innings in a victory versus Joliet on July 28.

Overall, Woody is 2-3 with a 3.16 era in 18 games, going 2-2, 4.50 in his four starts. He has fanned 40 in 51.1 innings and held opponents to a .234 average.

A fourth round selection of the Florida Marlins in June 1999, Woody played three seasons in Florida's system and one year in the Seattle organization. He spent 2003 at Springfield-Ozark in the Frontier League, where he made his only previous pro pitching appearance, playing all nine positions in the season finale. Woody, who hit a school record 19 home runs for the University of Washington in 1999, began throwing off a mound this past off-season.

Templeton, in his second season with the RailCats, managed in the Angels minor league system from 1998-2001.
