New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

As the second half of the 2008 campaign got underway Friday, the New Orleans Zephyrs fell to the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes, 7-1.

Zephyrs starter Claudio Vargas struggled with his command, and could not make it out of the fifth inning. Vargas (3-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and walking five in 4.2 innings.

The Isotopes grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second after Dallas McPherson walked to lead off and Tagg Bozied doubled. Chase Lambin delivered an RBI single and Lorenzo Scott followed with a sacrifice fly.

Albuquerque chased Vargas from the game in the fifth, when Lambin and Scott again combined to drive in runs in the three-run frame.

Scott drove in three runs on the night despite just one official at-bat, and stole three bases. He also threw out John Rodriguez at the plate to stall a Zephyrs threat in the fourth.

The Isotopes stole five bases overall against catcher Raul Casanova, with McPherson stealing second and third in the third inning.

Chris Aguila, in his first game back with the Z's since clearing waivers from the New York Mets this week, hit a solo homer in the sixth off Frankie De La Cruz to account for the lone Zephyrs run.

De La Cruz (10-5) allowed the one run on five hits in six innings, working around five walks of his own to notch the win.

The teams meet for the second game of the series Saturday at 6 p.m. RHP Brandon Knight, recently named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, will face RHP Bobby Keppel.
