Iowa Cubs News Release
The Iowa Cubs came back from the All-Star break with a bang, defeating the Nashville Sounds 6-1 Friday night in front of a season-high 13,259 people at Principal Park. Luis Figueroa drove in three runs for the Cubs in the fifth inning when he hit his 12th double of the year. Jason Dubois led off the inning with a single, followed by a Josh Kroeger walk and a single by Bobby Scales to load the bases for Figueroa. Nashville got on the board early when Tony Gwynn tripled in his first at-bat and came around to score on a Laynce Nix RBI groundout in the first inning, for a 1-0 lead. The Sounds' lead would not last as Iowa tied the game 1-1 in the second inning when starting pitcher Mitch Atkins helped his cause and drove in Kroeger. Iowa plated two more in the third inning on back-to-back-to-back doubles from Kroeger, Scales and Koyie Hill, for a 3-1 lead heading into the fourth inning. Felix Pie claimed the 8-1 victory when he hit his seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot to left center field. Scales was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the win while Iowa tallied five extra base hits. Atkins picked up his second win allowing two hits and one run over seven innings. Richie Gardner (6-3) was tagged with the loss for Nashville.
