The Colorado Sky Sox shut down the Zephyr offense for the third straight game, and the Zephyrs committed three errors en route to a 5-3 loss Sunday night at Zephyr Field.
Hayden Penn started off the game on a roll, holding Colorado Springs without a hit through the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Matt Miller crushed a home run over the left field wall. Dan Ortmeier then singled and later scored on an error by Andy Gonzalez.
Zephyrs manager Edwin Rodriguez then brought in Tim Wood to relieve Penn. Wood promptly gave up a single to Edwin Bellorin, but Jai Miller threw out Kenny Perez at home plate to end the inning. Wood (1-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing two more runs in the seventh to allow the Sky Sox to go ahead 4-2.
Gaby Sanchez led the way for the Zephyr offense by going 2-for-3 with a solo home run. His homer, which came in the second inning, gave the Z's an early 1-0 lead.
Cameron Maybin returned to the lineup after missing two weeks with a sore back. He was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the game.
The two teams will wrap up their four game series Monday with Clay Hensley (RHP) facing off against Kurt Birkins (LHP) with the first pitch scheduled for 11:30 am.
